Corruption is the abuse of entrusted power for private gain. It can take many forms, such as bribery, embezzlement, fraud, or nepotism. Corruption erodes trust in government, undermines the rule of law, distorts markets, and hurts the poor disproportionately.
Lok Pal is a body or agency responsible for receiving and investigating complaints of corruption against public officials in India. The term "Lok Pal" means "protector of the people" in Hindi. The Lok Pal is similar to an ombudsman in other countries. The concept of a Lok Pal was first introduced in India in the 1960s, but it was not until 2013 that the Lok Pal and Lokayuktas Act was passed, establishing the office of the Lok Pal at the national level.
In Odisha, the Lok Pal is responsible for receiving and investigating complaints of corruption against public officials, including Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs), Members of Parliament (MPs), and government employees. The Lok Pal has the authority to conduct investigations, summon witnesses, and take other measures to facilitate its investigations. If the Lok Pal determines that a complaint is well-founded, it can recommend disciplinary action, including dismissal or prosecution, to the appropriate authorities.
The establishment of the Lok Pal in Odisha is an important step in the fight against corruption. By providing a mechanism for citizens to report corruption and holding public officials accountable for their actions, the Lok Pal can help to restore trust in government and ensure that public resources are used for the benefit of the people rather than for private gain.
