The National Green Tribunal (NGT) is a specialized court in India that deals with environmental disputes and issues related to conservation and protection of natural resources. It was established in 2010 under the National Green Tribunal Act, 2010, which was enacted to provide a legal platform for the effective and expeditious disposal of cases related to environmental protection and conservation of natural resources.
The mandate of the NGT is to:
Hear and decide cases related to the enforcement of any legal right related to the environment, or for the protection of environment, and to reduce the burden of litigation in other courts.
Provide relief and compensation for damages to persons and property, and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto.
Issue directions, orders, and writs, including writs in the nature of habeas corpus, mandamus, prohibition, quo warranto, and certiorari, to enforce the fundamental rights conferred by the Constitution.
Exercise such other powers as may be prescribed by law.
Monitor the implementation of policies and measures for the protection of the environment and for the conservation of natural resources.
Lay down standards and guidelines for the prevention and control of environmental pollution.
Advise the Government on matters relating to environmental protection and conservation of natural resources.
Perform such other functions as may be prescribed by law.
