Paris Agreement on Climate Change.

The Paris Agreement on Climate Change is a legally binding international treaty adopted by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in 2015. The main goal of the Paris Agreement is to limit global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius. This is to be achieved through the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, which are the main drivers of climate change. The Paris Agreement also seeks to strengthen the ability of countries to deal with the impacts of climate change and to provide financial assistance to developing countries to help them transition to low-carbon and climate-resilient economies.

The key elements of the Paris Agreement include:

• A long-term goal of keeping the global temperature increase to well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

• A commitment by all countries to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and to report on their progress towards achieving this goal.

• A mechanism for regularly reviewing and strengthening countries' commitments to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, in order to ensure that the global temperature increase remains well below 2 degrees Celsius.

• A commitment to provide financial assistance to developing countries to help them transition to low-carbon and climate-resilient economies and to adapt to the impacts of climate change.

• A commitment to enhance cooperation on technology development and transfer, in order to support the transition to low-carbon and climate-resilient economies.

The Paris Agreement has been ratified by 189 countries and the European Union, representing more than 95% of global greenhouse gas emissions. It is widely considered to be a major step forward in the global efforts to combat climate change and to ensure a sustainable future for all.
