Where will the jobs that India desperately needs come from?

Q.While we flaunt India's demographic dividend, we ignore the dropping rates of employability. What are we missing while doing so? Where will the jobs that India desperately needs come from? Explain.(2014)

Ans. While we flaunt India's demographic dividend, we ignore the dropping rates of

employability. The important aspects we are missing here are

  1. Poor education system from bottom to top. The largest part of India's schools is of poor quality.

  2. The overall quality of the higher education system is well below global standards and it has shown no significant sign of improving

  3. Poor skill set and low levels of employability has led to unemployment and disguised unemployment. The health, education and social status of population are missed while flaunting India's demographic dividend.

In order to reap the benefits of demographic dividend there is an urgent need to increase the employability. The jobs that India desperately needs come from

  • Industrial and manufacturing sectors, the rapid growth of the secondary sector in the country by bringing more FDI will generate a great demand for employment. Programs such as Make in India give more impetus to sluggish manufacturing sector.

  • By imparting skill, vocational training, proper education and empowerment of the working population.

  •  The Small and Medium Enterprises sector can play a key role in creating jobs and high economic growth. SMEs have the potential to provide employment for the exceptionally large labour force that is still working in agriculture.

  •  Tourism sector in India has a great potential for generating employment.

  • While 10% of total world jobs come from tourism, in India hardly 4 crore people are employed.

  • The industry can enter the education sector to make people 'work-ready' after they finish formal education.
